1996 and newer vehicles will be tested with a computer hook up between the inspection machine and your vehicle’s computer. If the “check engine” light is on and stays on, it is an automatic failure for the inspection. We can do some diagnostics to help you when you see your engine mechanic but we cannot repair any problems. If you have had your battery disconnected for any reason, you must drive the vehicle for at least a week to get your computer to reset all emissions controls. More than two “not ready” on the actual test will result in a failure. Motorhomes will require only a test performed by turning the key on and off. If the “check engine” light goes off when the vehicle is started, it has passed the emission test. When you present your vehicle for inspection, please have your proof of insurance with you. It must be up to date and have that specific vehicle on it. Check all your lights, including the license plate light, and be sure they are working. Likewise, check your windshield wipers and make sure there are no tears in them. All these things can save you money and time. 1995 and older vehicles will continue to have the regular type emission test. Any vehicle older than 25 years will require only a safety test. No emissions will be done on those. Any vehicle younger than two years bought outside of Texas will require only a safety test. After two years, it will require a complete inspection. |
